Semana 88 ( Banana Bats)

Buenas!!

Great week! At the beginning of the week we had our leadership conference! This meant a 12 hour bus ride. Got to the city at 6. Super spiritual conference. We gave a fire workshop on giving PIE! Then another 12 hour bus ride home. It was awesome! Such a fun time! Benadryl works wonders!!!

CPEC!! Got up early to go pay a visit to the other Elders. It was good! We got to build our relationship with them which was great!

Ate cow tail this week! It was pretty interesting. Really hard to eat though!

We contacted 120 people on Saturday and invited them all to church! It was a really fun day! jaja

Church was a huge miracle! 39 people showed, and the little house was packed to the brim! It was awesome!

A member gave us tacos and they were... wow... so delicious. I wish I could eat more!

We are living with bats! That's fun! I guess I'm just like Batman now!

As for my spiritual thought, me and my companion have started what is called a 40 day fast. Basically we fasted and asked God to give us revelation on things to abstain from for 40 days so that we can be more purified and have the Spirit with us! Man is it hard!

It really is fulfilling the scripture in Ether 12:27 "And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them."

God sure showed me a lot of my weaknesses when I asked! But, He has been helping me a lot to overcome them! The power of prayer is truly miraculous!!!

Anyways. Love y'all lots! Hope y'all are doing well! Keep praying for my zone and my people!

Also, sorry if I don't respond to any letters. I'm gonna go a little while without writing to people.

Until Next Week!

Semana 87 (International Banana Day)

Buenas!!

Happy International Banana Day everyone! Well, it was actually yesterday (April 21), but the spirit is still the same! We did in fact receive free bananas! So that was a win!

This week was really good! We did intercambios. I went with Elder Nelson! The best part was that the Senior couple, the Barkers, were visiting Changuinola! They go home in about 2 weeks. During my time in Penonomé and Antón, I became really good friends with them! So it was fun to have dinner with them, talk and catch up, and just be with them :)

I'll for sure miss them though! Saying goodbye is the pits!

ARMANDO GOT BAPTIZED!!!!!! It was a good day! I'm super happy for him! He was also really happy, and it was just a really good time :)

Every once in a while we see kids playing street soccer, so we join in for about 5 minutes. It's really fun! What is more fun is when they think gringos are bad at soccer, but we destroy them every time!

Once again, HAPPY INTERNATIONAL BANANA DAY!! It's kind of a big deal here!

Anyways. Love you all lots! Please pray for my area! And my zone! A lot here depends on the missionaries, and we need all the prayers and miracles we can get. Until Next Week!

Semana 86 (Banana Chefs)

Buenas!!!

Great week! On Saturday our recent convert Ismael followed us around. So we ended up having a ton of lessons with a member! It was so awesome! Ismael is gonna be such a good missionary some day!

My new companion, Elder Ence, is super awesome! He is a really happy guy and hardworking! We are gonna have a super fun transfer together full of miracles!

We helped someone steal a bike... we saw a guy struggling with two bikes, so we went to help him. We held one bike while he ran to stash the other bike somewhere. Then he came back and rode away. Well, about 10 minutes later a guy comes up to us crying. He was telling us how someone stole his bike and he couldn't get home. We then realized that we helped someone steal a bike! We felt kinda bad. But we offered him a prayer!

Church was super good this week! We got there. Set everything up. Waited. Waited. Waited. Then 9 o'clock rolled around which is when church starts. There were a total of 5 people there. Me, Elder Ence, 2 members, and a friend of ours.

We were a little worried. Ok a lot worried. But, 5 minutes later EVERYONE showed up! We ended up having 33 people at church and it was super good! Our 3 friends there also loved church! Super big miracle!

Sunday night was super fun too! We went over to la familia Morales house, and we learned to cook Hojaldras! And naturally we asked them to turn on the music from Ratatouille. After all, anyone can cook! There was a lot of food! We were kinda focused on just making the food, we didn't really think ahead to the fact that whatever we cooked, we would have to eat. My comp is a champ tho! He ate 12 Hojaldras!!! That's insane!

Anyways. Love you all lots! Have a great week! Keep praying for my people! Until next week!

Semana 86

Dear Elder Lutze,

Rachael and I are having a blast in DC. So much amazing history! Kyle and Camilla took us to see the DC temple tonight! Gorgeous! Remember you are named after Jacob the Book of Mormon prophet but spelled Jakob in honor of your German ancestors!

Love you!😘

Mom

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland: “No prophet in the Book of Mormon, by temperament or personal testimony, seems to have gone about that work of persuasion any more faithfully than did Jacob. He scorned the praise of the world, he taught straight, solid, even painful doctrine, and he knew the Lord personally. His is a classic Book of Mormon example of a young man’s decision to suffer the cross and bear the shame of the world in defense of the name of Christ. Life, including those difficult early years when he saw the wickedness of Laman and Lemuel bring his father and mother down to their graves in grief, was never easy for this firstborn in the wilderness” (Christ and the New Covenant [1997], 62–63). 7 Wherefore we labored diligently among our people, that we might persuade them to come unto Christ, and partake of the goodness of God, that they might enter into his rest, lest by any means he should swear in his wrath they should not enter in, as in the provocation in the days of temptation while the children of Israel were in the wilderness. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/jacob/1?id=p7&lang=eng#p7

Semana 85 (The Banana Flood of 2024)

Buenas!!

First of all, CONFERENCE WAS SO GOOD!!!! Second of all, LEHI IS GETTING A TEMPLE!!! LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!

This week was really good! Last week of the transfer!

*We did a CPEC in Almirante which was fun! And really far away jaja

*Saw a monkey and became friends with the monkey. They are surprisingly very kind!

*I destroyed a kid in soccer and megged him 3 times 😎

*We were looking for a shortcut to go to Tehobroma. We couldn't find one. But we did find a random kid playing Titanic on his flute! It was pretty funny! It was even funnier when he asked us to sing the song. How could we refuse that? So to some interesting flute playing, we sang the Titanic song.

*We got new bed frames!!! I'm no longer sleeping on bricks!!

*Saw a very purple dog

*Transfer week! I'm staying! And training a new ZL, Elder Ence! I'm excited for this transfer, it is gonna be super fun!

*Fun fact, cats can get dizzy

*Cows invaded our home

*I discovered how Nephi was so large in stature

As far as the title goes, it went from being extremely hot to pouring rain!!! Our house almost flooded! The other Elders house did flood! All of Banana town was just flooding! It was insane!

There are so many good thoughts from Conference! I invite you all to reread your notes or rewatch the talks! I promise you will find something of worth to apply to your life!

I love the thought of preparing for the temple! As missionaries we cant go to the temple. And the members here live very far from the temple. But, that does not prevent us from still receiving the blessings from the temple! The way we prepare to go to the temple is as if we are preparing to go live in Heaven with God!

So I invite you to always think of your actions, and what you do with your time. And to reflect on whether or not that is helping you prepare to go to the temple. I love and miss the temple a lot, but I know, the more I prepare myself to go, the better experience I will have!

Anyways. Love y'all lots! Have a great week! Keep praying for my people and my zone! Until Next Week!

Semana 85

Dear Elder Lutze,

I pray for your success as a missionary, a companion, and a ZL. I thank God every day for your faithful service to Him and His Son Jesus Christ. I know you'll work hard to the end of your mission. This week was crazy! Working hard at work and at home... Filled 4 trash cans with yard waste and only half done. I'm trying to get everything done before Rachael and I leave on Friday for Europe. I hope we'll be able to talk on Wednesday and again next Monday. Dad and I did sealings on Friday and finished buying food for General Conference. We've had a house full all weekend - Rachael, Cami, Caleb, Jeffrey, Chrissy, and Grant, and of course the McBrides. I'm missing you and Natalie. Yesterday was like being in a ''snowglobe." It would snow and then stop, snow and then stop! It's April people!!! I've really enjoyed Conference... for me it's been about prayer, the INFINITE Atonement, and our foundation in Christ. I really like our new apostle Patrick Kearon! I could listen to his accent all day. He's given 3 other talks in General Conference. I pasted his first one below. I also loved this quote from Pres. Benson about sharing the gospel and Pres. Hinckley on the power of the Book of Mormon.

Have a great week!

Love,

💞 Mom

We are the Hissers

President Ezra Taft Benson proclaimed the need for members of the Church to actively declare the truths of the Restoration. By so doing, we become the “hissers” spoken of in 2 Nephi 29:2–3: “Our main task is to declare the gospel and do it effectively. We are not obligated to answer every objection. Every man eventually is backed up to the wall of faith, and there he must make his stand. … “The Book of Mormon is to be used ‘for a standard unto my people, which are of the house of Israel,’ the Lord says, and its words ‘shall hiss forth unto the ends of the earth.’ (2 Ne. 29:2.) We, the members of the Church, and particularly the missionaries, have to be the ‘hissers,’ or the tellers and testifiers, of the Book of Mormon unto the ends of the earth. “The Book of Mormon is the great standard we are to use. … The Book of Mormon is the great finder of the golden contact. It does not contain things which are ‘pleasing unto the world’ (1 Ne. 6:5). … It is a great sieve” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1975, 95–96; or Ensign, May 1975, 65).

President Gordon B. Hinckley shared the following example of how the Book of Mormon changed a life forever: “[The Book of Mormon] has touched for good the lives of millions who have prayerfully read it and pondered its language. May I tell you of one such I recently met in Europe. “He was a businessman, successful in his undertakings. In the course of his travels he met two of our missionaries. They tried to set up an appointment to teach him. He put them off but finally agreed to listen. He somewhat perfunctorily accepted what they had to say. He became convinced in his mind that they spoke the truth, but he was not moved in his heart. “He decided that he would read the Book of Mormon. He said that he had been a man of the world, never given to crying. But as he read the book, tears coursed his cheeks. It did something to him. He read it again and felt the same emotions. What had been conversion of the mind became conversion of the heart. “His way of life was altered, his perspective changed. He threw himself into the work of the Lord. Today he fills a high and holy calling in the cause he has come to love” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1990, 70; or Ensign, Nov. 1990,52). 2 And also, that I may remember the promises which I have made unto thee, Nephi, and also unto thy father, that I would remember your seed; and that the words of your seed should proceed forth out of my mouth unto your seed; and my words shall hiss forth unto the ends of the earth, for a standard unto my people, which are of the house of Israel; https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/29?id=p2&lang=eng#p2

Newest Apostle Patrick Kearon’s 2010 talk

“Come unto Me with Full Purpose of Heart, and I Shall Heal You” By Elder Patrick Kearon Of the Seventy

Our Savior is the Prince of Peace, the Great Healer, the only One who can truly cleanse us from the sting of sin. Tonight I would like to share a message of comfort and healing with any of you who feels alone or forsaken, has lost peace of mind or heart, or feels that you have thrown away your last chance. Complete healing and peace can be found at the feet of the Savior. As a seven-year-old boy living in the Arabian Peninsula, I was consistently told by my parents to always wear my shoes, and I understood why. I knew that shoes would protect my feet against the many threats to be found in the desert, such as snakes, scorpions, and thorns. One morning after a night’s camping in the desert, I wanted to go exploring, but I did not want to bother with putting on my shoes. I rationalized that I was only going for a little wander and I would stay close by the camp. So instead of shoes, I wore flip-flops. I told myself that flip-flops were shoes—of a sort. And anyway, what could possibly happen? As I walked along the cool sand—in my flip-flops—I felt something like a thorn going into the arch of my foot. I looked down and saw not a thorn but a scorpion. As my mind registered the scorpion and I realized what had just happened, the pain of the sting began to rise from my foot and up my leg. I grabbed the top of my leg to try and stop the searing pain from moving farther, and I cried out for help. My parents came running from the camp. As my father battered the scorpion with a shovel, an adult friend who was camping with us heroically tried to suck the venom from my foot. At this moment I thought that I was going to die. I sobbed while my parents loaded me into a car and set off across the desert at high speed toward the nearest hospital, which was over two hours away. The pain all through my leg was excruciating, and for that entire journey, I assumed that I was dying. When we finally reached the hospital, however, the doctor was able to assure us that only small infants and the severely malnourished are threatened by the sting of that type of scorpion. He administered an anesthetic, which numbed my leg and took away any sensation of pain. Within 24 hours I no longer had any effects from the sting of the scorpion. But I had learned a powerful lesson. I had known that when my parents told me to wear shoes, they did not mean flip-flops; I was old enough to know that flip-flops did not provide the same protection as a pair of shoes. But that morning in the desert, I disregarded what I knew to be right. I ignored what my parents had repeatedly taught me. I had been both lazy and a little rebellious, and I paid a price for it. As I address you valiant young men, your fathers, teachers, leaders, and friends, I pay tribute to all who are diligently striving to become what the Lord needs and wants you to be. But I testify from my own experience as a boy and as a man that disregarding what we know to be right, whether through laziness or rebelliousness, always brings undesirable and spiritually damaging consequences. No, the scorpion did not in the end threaten my life, but it caused extreme pain and distress to both me and my parents. When it comes to how we live the gospel, we must not respond with laziness or rebelliousness. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ and as bearers of the priesthood, we know the commandments and standards we have covenanted to uphold. When we choose another path from the one we know to be right, as taught by our parents and leaders and as confirmed to our own hearts by the Holy Ghost, it is like stepping onto the desert sand in flip-flops instead of shoes. We then seek to justify our lazy or rebellious behavior. We tell ourselves we’re not really doing anything that wrong, that it doesn’t really matter, and that nothing all that bad will result from letting go just a little from the iron rod. Perhaps we console ourselves with the thought that everyone else is doing it—or doing worse—and we won’t be negatively affected anyway. We somehow convince ourselves that we are the exception to the rule and therefore immune to the consequences of breaking it. We refuse, sometimes willfully, to be “exactly obedient”—as it says in Preach My Gospel—and we hold back a portion of our hearts from the Lord. And then we get stung. The scriptures teach us that “the Lord requireth the heart,” and we are commanded to love the Lord and serve Him with “all [our] heart.” The promise is that we “may stand blameless before God at the last day” and return to His presence. The Anti-Nephi-Lehies in the Book of Mormon laid down their weapons of war and buried them deep in the earth, covenanting never again to take up arms against their brethren. But they did more than that. “They became a righteous people” because “they did lay down the weapons of their rebellion, that they did not fight against God any more.” Their conversion was so complete and so profound that they “never did fall away.” But before their conversion, remember their state: they were living in what the scriptures call “open rebellion against God.” Their rebellious hearts sentenced them to live “in a state contrary to the nature of happiness” because they had “gone contrary to the nature of God.” When they laid down their weapons of rebellion, they qualified themselves for the Lord’s healing and peace, and so can we. The Savior assures, “If they harden not their hearts, and stiffen not their necks against me, they shall be converted, and I will heal them.” You and I can accept His invitation to “return and repent, and come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I shall heal [you].” Contrast this miraculous healing with what happens “when we undertake to cover our sins, or to gratify our pride [or] our vain ambition. … The heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved;” and we are left alone “to kick against the pricks … and to fight against God.” Brethren, we find healing and relief only when we bring ourselves to the feet of the Great Physician, our Savior, Jesus Christ. We must lay down our weapons of rebellion (and we each know what they are). We must lay down our sin, vanity, and pride. We must give up our desires to follow the world and to be respected and lauded by the world. We must cease fighting against God and instead give our whole hearts to Him, holding nothing back. Then He can heal us. Then He can cleanse us from the venomous sting of sin. “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” President James E. Faust taught: “When obedience becomes our goal, it is no longer an irritation; instead of a stumbling block, it becomes a building block. … “… Obedience leads to true freedom. The more we obey revealed truth, the more we become liberated.” Last week I met a 92-year-old man who had been involved in many of the major campaigns of World War II. He had survived three injuries, one of which was a land-mine blast to the jeep in which he was traveling, which killed the driver. He learned that to survive in a minefield, you must follow exactly in the tracks of the vehicle moving ahead of you. Any deviation to the right or left could—and indeed did—prove fatal. Our prophets and apostles, leaders and parents continually point out the track we must follow if we would avoid a destructive blast to our souls. They know the path that has been safely cleared of mines (or indeed scorpions), and they tirelessly invite us to follow behind them. There are so many devastating traps to entice us from the track. Straying into drugs, alcohol, pornography, or immoral behavior over the Internet or on a video game will head us straight toward an explosion. Deviating to the right or the left of the safe track ahead of us, whether because of laziness or rebelliousness, can prove fatal to our spiritual lives. There are no exceptions to this rule. If we have strayed from the track, we can change, we can return, and we can recapture our joy and our inner peace. We will discover that returning to the track from which the land mines have been removed brings enormous relief. No one can find peace in a minefield. Our Savior is the Prince of Peace, the Great Healer, the only One who can truly cleanse us from the sting of sin and the poison of pride and change our rebellious hearts into converted, covenant hearts. His Atonement is infinite and embraces us all. The invitation given to the Nephites, when He ministered to them as the resurrected Christ, is still in force for you and for me: “Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them.” Not one of you has thrown away your last chance. You can change, you can come back, you can claim mercy. Come unto the only One who can heal, and you will find peace. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Semana 84 (A Banana Easter)

Buenas!!

HAPPY EASTER!!!! I may not have seen any bunnies or eggs, but I sure saw lots of bananas! 🍌

What a great week! Full of inviting everyone to come to church on the most special day there is!

On Tuesday we had our Zone Conference! It was a good time! Very spiritually uplifting!

We are teaching a bartender named Lujan! He is so awesome! His son is super awesome too! They are just two guys, happy to be learning something new.

We had exchanges this week! I went with Elder Vasquez! Super fun time! It was funny though, he is the second missionary to come to our area and say to me after, "Wow, I thought the Ngobes in my area were not receptive. But the ones here are on a whole different level!"
In the end, he told me that Las 30 is an area meant to perfect a missionary. In other words, I am learning A LOT of patience. But that's good! I'm learning a lot of really good things here!

We had some other super good lessons this week with some friends! Yorlenis, the cousin of Ismael, is progressing super well!

Our friend Armando is also progressing a lot! He speaks pretty good English too! We had taught, and invited him in English to be baptized, but I think the translation got a little lost there. He told us, "I think I already was baptized."

We returned another day, and taught the Restoration. After he said, "I asked my mom if I was baptized, she said no. So can I be baptized?"

We kinda sat there surprised. It was more us trying to process what just happened. Because that never happens here. After about 15 seconds of a bit of an awkward silence, we happily agreed, and set a goal with him!

Miracle Moment! Easter Sunday came around, and what an amazing Sunday! 10 of our friends came to church!!! Literally half of the attendance of our little group! It was so awesome! All of our friends that really needed to come, came! And it was such a spiritual Sunday! Huge miracle!

We also planned a last minute family home evening with some members. So Sunday we went and invited a bunch of members, and some friends! It turned out to be a big success! Some friends came, and it was a super spiritual time!

Spiritual Thought

I only get to be a representative of Jesus Christ for these two years, meaning 2 Easters. Easter is a very special time of the year! So I'll make the most of it! As a representative of Jesus Christ I testify that Jesus lives! That He overcame death. I know that He suffered all our pain, sadness, weakness, and more than we could ever imagine. I know that Jesus loves and knows each one of us personally. I know these things to be true because I've read the scriptures, and I have asked God in prayer if these things are true. I know and promise each one of you that if you have a desire to know, and ask God in prayer, He will answer you. As His representative I testify and promise these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
