Semana 60 (Star Fruit! Eclipse? Axes)

Buenas!!!

This week and a half was super good! But also super sad. I don't remember a whole ton, but I'll hit the highlights!

We had a Multi-Zone Conference with Elder Giuffra of the Seventy! It was a super awesome experience! He gave some great advice to us all, and helped us really see our calling as missionaries! Then I got to have an interview with him which was also really cool! Only about 4 of us were selected.

We had a service project on Saturday which was really fun! I got to put my raking abilities to use! This was funny because it's technically fall, but Panama only has two seasons and the leaves don't fall. What happened is that there were a bunch of people mowing the grass with weed wackers (they don't have lawn mowers), and we were in charge of raking the grass to clean it up. Fun times!

I had some good food this week! Ate with the family Farias which meant delicious Peruvian food! Tacos. Lots of desserts for some reason. Dulce de Leche is absolutely the bomb!

I tried Star Fruit for the first time! IT'S SOOOOO GOOOD! Definitely my new favorite fruit. Not only because it tastes good, but it looks cool too!

Coconut water

Apparently there was an eclipse? I was outside the entire day, and I didn't seem to notice a thing 😂

We had a zone council which is different from the Zone conference. It was fun to see all my friends!

Then this week there were a lot of goodbyes. It was really sad! I said goodbye to lots of the members and my friends. I said bye to Hermana Fernandez which was sad too. She and I had arrived in Penonomé together, and she really felt like a sister to me. But she's on her way back to Perú! In total I had about 6 months in this area/branch, so everyone felt like family. Goodbyes are for sure hard, but that's how you know there was love and joy!

I am very excited for the transfers tho! I'm going to La Zona Arraiján! I'll be in Vista Alegre 2! I have some fun assignments this transfer, and I'm looking forward to working hard!

For the spiritual thought, I was thinking a lot about a story.

Two men are in a competition to see who can cut down more trees in a day. At 6 in the morning they began chopping away! The first man kept chopping and chopping, and never took a single break. But, he always saw the second man walking away to take breaks for about 10 minutes or so. The first man thought to himself

"He has taken so many breaks, there's no possible way he can beat me. I've been chopping trees all day without letting up!"

The day finally ended! Both stopped chopping, and it was time to count the trees. To the surprise of the first man, the second man had cut down many more trees than he had!

"How is it possible?" the first man questioned.

"I chopped all day long while you took many breaks throughout the day! What were you doing?"

The second man responded, "Oh, I was going to sharpen my axe."

This story has a lot of applications to our lives! But I personally like to think of the Spirit. The Spirit helps us to do many things. It helps us "cut trees."  But we can't just cut and cut and cut without end. We must sharpen our axes. Or we must do more to have the Spirit with us! To put it very simply, the Spirit literally is a part of the Godhead. It's very very powerful. We can't simply do nothing, and then think that we can receive its power in our lives. We have to work for it. We have to want it more than anything else. We have to care like blazes! God will always bless us. But we are the ones who choose to sharpen our axes or not.

It's hard to explain the whole thought process of it all. But just think about it! Then think of what you can do better to more fully enjoy the power of the Spirit in your lives! You gotta want it!

Love you all! The church is true! Please pray for my people! The people of Vista Alegre 2! Until Next week!

Semana 54 (A God of Miracles!)

Buenas!

What is up my fellow children of God?! This week was fantastic as always, so let's get into it! Imma hit up the three highlights.

Wednesday was exchanges! I went to good ol' Aguadulce (Sweet Water). We had a grand time of teaching! But let me tell ya, the name of this place is deceiving... it is not in fact 'sweet water,' but a fiery furnace. All was good and well tho, because the Elders in fact have AC in their rooms! It's a house of 4 Elders, and being with all Latinos is one of the greatest experiences. The jokes were flying, and the food was cooking! As the time to go to bed rolled around, the power went out... which meant no AC or fans. I have never been so hot in my life! And sleeping was impossible! This place was not 'Sweet Water' but 'Sweat Water.' All in all, the time was great, aside from my trip to the sauna!

Thursday was a big big miracle, but I'll get to that!

Friday we saw two miracles! We taught two of our people with baptism dates! First, we taught Henry. The miracle with him is the fact that he is living the law of chastity! He kept talking about his girlfriend and how he wants her to be baptized too, but we definitely thought bad things were going down. Well, luckily they aren't, so Henry is going strong!

Then, the same day we taught Blanca! Now she had a huge problem with coffee! Born and raised on the stuff sorta thing. We had taught her the Word of Wisdom two weeks ago, and had suggested many things to help her. She agreed to try, but kept talking about how much she drinks it, and how hard it would be etc., etc. Well, when we taught her Friday, she said to us "I have completely dropped coffee." It was such a miracle! God truly does help His children! So Blanca is ready to be baptized! Sadly I won't be here for her baptism, but I'm so excited for her!

Now back to Thursday! There was the baptism of Osmar!

Background is that he is the husband of a member. Many, many missionaries had tried with him but couldn't get through. Then the sister missionaries finally were able to get him on date to be baptized! However, it was still a bit of a toss up if he would go through with it.

Well, he ended up getting really sick from a problem caused from diluted medications he took years ago. He had been to many doctors, but they could never find a solution. They were about to go to the doctors, but they had me and my comp come give him a blessing first. We gave him the blessing and they were off.

A few days later, the doctors found a solution and he was healed! It was a miracle! Osmar and his wife later explained the experience to us. They said that the moment we explained what the blessing was they started to feel the Spirit. Then, after the blessing, Osmar felt a lot of peace and a hope that he hadn't felt before about his medical situation.

We later came to find out that from him feeling the Spirit so strongly from that whole process, that it finally pushed him to being baptized! His wife texted us, and asked me for a favor. She said, "What my husband felt when you blessed him was something really special, and he wants you to baptize him!"

The baptismal service was on Thursday, and it was so special! I've never seen a family as happy as this one! It was such a privilege to be a part of this experience! God truly is a God of miracles!

I love you all! I hope you all are doing well! Please continue praying for my people! Until Next Week!

Semana 53 (Christ's Church? Acting? 365?)

Buenas!

I have zero energy to write this, but I felt obligated because....

🎵Woooooooooah we're halfwaaaaaaay theeeeeere, woooooooah! Livin' on a praaayer!🎵

Indeed folks, I have been a missionary for exactly 365 days from today!

Aside from that, my week was good!

I was asked a question by an old lady I never thought I'd be asked. We were teaching about the restoration when suddenly the lady looked at me and asked "Where in the Bible did it say it was Christ's church!?" 💁‍♂️🤦

The whole 'in love with me recent convert' thing is still going strong. Apparently, I was good enough at acting/pretending that I hadn't seen the message and that everything was normal that she believed I hadn't seen it! But that, in fact, led her to confronting me and telling me in person... yea that was pretty awkward 😬 😅

Anyways. Life's good folks! The church is true! Christ loves all of you so much! If you don't believe it, pray to God to help you see and feel it!

Keep praying for my people! Love y'all lots!

Until next week!

Semana 52 (Love Note = Transfer Time)

Buenas!

This week was really good! We had some really good lessons with our recent converts! There are quite a few in this area, so it takes quite a bit of our time.

Tuesday we celebrated one of the Sister missionary's birthday which was fun! Hermana Altamirano! Then we had a lesson with Blanca, and we put a baptism goal with her! I'm so excited for her! Sadly, I won't be here when she gets baptized :(  But, nonetheless, I am so happy for her and her family!

So that same day one of our recent converts, Yasmina, gave me a painting of an anime character I like! It looks pretty dang cool! I didn't really think too much of it, but later I was looking to see if she had signed it. Looking at the painting I didn't see a signature, and I thought that was a little strange. Then I thought... "There's a love note on the back..." And sure enough there was! So, our recent convert is in love with me. It's pretty dang awkward. I act normal around her, so she doesn't feel bad, but man do I feel weird. So, I will be leaving Penonome when transfers come around, and I'm so sad! I love the members here so much!

We had lunch with Sister Swift! Other sad news is that she is moving. but so am I in a few weeks, so I'm not too bummed. Today we are going to go spend time with her at the private beach! I'm hyped!

Zone Conference was this week! So much fun to see so many friends! It was a nice time of rest, learning, and spiritual charging! I saw some friends I hadn't seen in a while, so I was super happy! Such a good day!

We ate more Peruvian food which was amazing as always! And we played hide n seek with the kids of Brother and Sister Farias which was fun! As well as chased them with our umbrellas that were indeed lightsabers! Kids are the best!

We played more chess this week! Surprisingly I won the majority of the games! It's quite a fun game to learn!

Sunday was chill! Church was amazing as always! And I was translating the whole day for sister Swift which was pretty fun as well! Then we enjoyed the day of rest with lessons, studies, and planning!

I have also learned recently that one of my favorite principles is that there is opposition in all things! It truly is amazing all the things you learn with this concept in mind. But my thought for the week is the idea between Light and Darkness/Good and Evil. To put it simply, we have the option to fill space/our minds with light or darkness. If there is darkness which could be all sorts of things, the opposition or the way to get rid of darkness is by an equal or higher exertion of light. Or in other words goodness - things of God, service, scriptures, prayer, etc. There's a lot more I could talk about on this particular subject, but I don't have time. So think about it!

Love you all! Have a great week! Keep praying for my people! Until Next Week!

Semana 51 (Anton Group Coup?)

Buenas!!

This week was pretty good! We started off strong with a spiritual experience on Monday night! The family we were going to teach was not at their house. So, we decided to teach a man named Henry! The lesson was pretty normal until Elder Keck started to explain about Joseph Smith. I started to feel the spirit so strong. Then, out of nowhere, Elder Keck started speaking in fluent Spanish! By the end of Joseph Smith's experience with the first vision, Henry was crying. Then Elder Keck's Spanish went away completely. We will see what happens with Henry, but it was a cool experience!

Another day it started absolutely pouring! Of course, it was the ONLY day I forgot my umbrella... So Elder Keck and I just huddled under his tiny one, shuffling along the streets. Eventually a man called out to us to let us take cover under his home! We must have been quite the sight! We ended up teaching him, and he loved the Book of Mormon! The only problem is the fact that he doesn't live in our area, and he left to go to Panama City... so we'll pray that the missionaries there find him soon!

We had a Zone Council! We wasted a lot of money and time. But, it was fun to see everyone from the Zone and all the new missionaries that are here too! This coming week we have our Zone Conference which is not a waste of money or time, and I am pumped for that!

Played lots of Chess

Ate more heavenly food from Peru! Literally the best food I've had here has come from La Hermana Farias. She never disappoints!

The branch had a big party on Saturday for the Young Single Adults! This meant everyone in the branch went, had food, and danced a lot! We got there late because we had a Noche de Hogar with the group of Anton which was way fun!  The branch party was also lit! Let's just say Saturday was a good day!

Sunday was really good as well, even though the members/group of Anton pulled a fast one on us. Mutiny isn't the right word for this, but essentially everyone decided that it would be better to start church at 9! So starting next week, church in Anton is at 9. That isn't a bad thing, except for the fact that we, as the missionaries, have to attend in Penonome and Anton. But now they both start at 9... and are 45 minutes away from each other by drive. We'll see what happens with that one! The point of needing missionary presence was brought up as well. And they said "We don't need the missionaries." But, they literally rely on us for EVERYTHING. Then about 10 minutes later all of them said "Wait, you guys actually have to come here on Sundays. We need you." Maybe 'coup' is the right word 😂

Anyways. My spiritual thought for the week has to do with an experience I had on Sunday. I was talking with one of my friends here at church, and they shared some heavy things about their life. We talked a bit, and not really knowing what to do or say I tried to provide comfort. By the end, I received an impression to have her look at the painting of Jesus that was next to us and have her tell me what she saw. She stared at it for a while, and then said "Love." It was then that the Spirit was able to give a greater witness to her and to me that Jesus loves us. If there was one thing I would want everyone to know, it would be that Jesus loves them so perfectly. We all struggle. But in the end he is always there to love and to pick us up again if we let Him. I challenge you all to ponder, look, and pray to feel and see the love that Christ has for you individually. It may not make our problems go away, but it will give us hope, comfort, and peace in our lives.

Love you all! Keep my people in your prayers, please! God made you special, and he loves you very much! Until Next Week!

Semana 50 (THIS IS NOT A DRILL!)

Buenas!!

What a fantastic week! We had some good lessons with some people I feel are very positive! We are hoping to be able to return soon to all of them, and continue to guide them on this great journey!

Random things of the week for y'all! We ate an insane amount of rice. Played some chess. And thought waaaaaaaay too much about the premortal life and after life. However, these are all things that made the week very enjoyable!

Then Saturday rolled around which was exciting because Obdulia got baptized!! All was good until we went to get the keys to the church to prepare everything. Well, it turned out that the lady who had the keys left for another part of Panama, and she had taken the keys! Well, no biggy because Presidente Arrocha has keys! Well, he was also really far away. After many, many phone calls I was able to find someone with keys to get in the church! Elder Keck and I ran for about 20 minutes, got the keys, then ran back to the church. By this time it was 12:45, and the baptism started at 1. We cleaned the font, and started filling it. By a miracle, the font filled up in 30 minutes! It usually takes at least 2 hours! We started a little late, but it was such a special moment! And Obdulia was so happy! What an amazing day of miracles!

Ok folks, get your popcorn because here is where the real story begins...

Sunday was a great day! After church in Anton, Elder Keck and I went to do our planning in the church at Penonome as always. We arrived at the church just as Presidente Arrocha was leaving. He left, locked up the gates, and we went into the office to plan. The office is completely sealed and no one can see inside of it. We were alone and having a good planning session. Suddenly the fire alarm goes off! My first thought was, "it can't be a fire because we are alone. It will probably turn off in a second." Well, about 5 seconds later we heard a door close. Elder Keck and I looked at each other realizing we weren't alone... Maybe it was just a member cooking something in the kitchen? We left the office to go check. Elder Keck walked down the hall, as I checked the kitchen. The kitchen was empty, so I left to go back towards Elder Keck. He was signaling for me to come quickly. The fire alarm had been pulled, and in front of the alarm there was a closet. Well, it just so happened that someone was staring at us from the closet window. Inside was Oliver... he isn't a member, but we had seen him in the church after it was over at 11. This meant Oliver had been hiding there for 6 hours, waiting for something or someone. To give background, Oliver is a man who has a crush on one of the sister missionaries. Mentally he is not always quite there and he is a bit of a stalker. We don't know why he was there or why he pulled the alarm, but we are fairly certain he was waiting for the sister missionaries. He knew people were alone in the office, but he didn't know who. So, most likely he pulled the alarm and hid in the closet to draw people out, or more specifically to possibly draw out the sisters. Now most of this is speculation. But, I'm glad it was Elder Keck and I at the church. Safe to say that I lived in a horror movie for a hot second there... Luckily nothing happened to us, but it was one of the creepiest things that has happened in my life

Anyways, I hope y'all enjoyed the story! Life is good! Working hard! Love you all so much! Keep praying for my people! Until Next Week!

Semana 49 (The Flesh is Weak, but the Spirit is Strong)

Buenas!!

Gotta love the 9 work days without a Pday in between folks! My Pday was moved to today, as evident by the email! We had transfers this week, and I'm happy to say Elder Keck and I will be staying together here in Penonome! ¡Tiempo para florecer! 😎

This week we had more of our Noche de Grupo with the family whose father died. We had some great messages, and ended with a beautiful message of Christ's Atonement! Some seeds were definitely planted in these 2 weeks with everyone!

The water got contaminated so I got extremely sick this week! I don't really remember Wednesday at all. I just remember being up all night losing all the fluids in my body. Then during the day I somehow ended up from my bed to the floor in the other room. I didn't have very much energy, but we still made it to the Noche de Grupo!

The next day some members fed us Lasagna AND Waffles for dinner. Let's just say that didn't bode well in my stomach either 😂

I got to play with the most adorable puppy I've ever seen! It looked like a little bear.

It was Peru Day this week as well! We live in Panama, but there's a hermana in our branch from Peru! She invited us to her house to eat! Literally the most amazing food I've ever tasted. Once again, did not bode well in my stomach. But! It was worth it! She made something that was essentially mashed potatoes, baked potato, and hash brown combined into one. Stuffed with meat, beans, cheese, and corn. SOOOOO GOOD! Then we learned how to dance like they do in Peru! I was oddly pretty good at it!

Monday we had a Zone Council and farewell for all the dying missionaries! It was a good time! Afterwards, Elder Keck, myself, and the sister missionaries all went to Sister Swift's house to have a little family home evening. It was awesome! Sister Swift is the lady from Africa who lives at a private resort! So we got to walk along the beach, eat yummy food, and then we had a really fun time talking! It was so good and special, especially because Sister Swift is always lonely which is sad. So, I was happy to go visit her and cheer her up! She feels a lot like an Aunt to me!

Funny enough, my thought this week came from the whole water contamination. There were two days where I was really really sick. And during those two days we had like 4 people ask us for blessings. We went to the houses and gave all of them blessings. During the blessings, I remember thinking how much I wanted to just heal these people because I myself was suffering, and I didn't want them to feel the same. Then I thought of the Atonement. Christ suffered all our pains and afflictions which means that not only did he suffer everything, but he doesn't want us to suffer! Not only does he have the power to heal us, but He wants to! Now our hard experiences are necessary to help us grow, but the way we grow is through the healing of Christ! So trust in Him! There was also a huge miracle with these blessings! One of the blessings we gave was to a member's husband who is not a member. He had problems a lot bigger than the water contamination, and was about to make his way to the hospital. We gave him a blessing and he was off to the hospital. Two days later he was back, and we asked him how he was feeling, and he said he felt a lot better now. He also said that when we gave him the blessing he felt so much peace over everything, and had felt hope about his condition for the first time! Such a miracle! He's also getting baptized soon! Sadly he lives in the sister missionaries area... but such a miracle!

I love you all so much! I hope everyone has a fantastic week! Keep praying for my people! Until Next Week!

Semana 48 (101 Grave Building)

Buenas!!

This was quite the interesting week, I'll tell ya that much! Definitely not how I thought it would go, but here we are!

The week started off well with an amazing Pday! We went to a place called "Pozo Azul.'' It was absolutely stunning! The only downside is we aren't allowed to swim...

Tuesday was a very strange day all around. We had to wake up at 11:45, meaning we got a whole 1.5 hours of sleep! Then we were off to the city! Elder Keck had to go get his migration card. We got back to our area later in the day to do some normal work. But then we received a call from Prezzy Arrocha to go to a member's house with him. Apparently the member had died the day before, so we were going over to give our condolences to the family. We sang some hymns, and we bore our testimonies.

Little did I know that we would be roped into a lot more than a visit! The next day Elder Keck and I were asked to go to the funeral, in which we obliged. We thought it would be fairly short, but we were wrong. It was indeed the opposite. We actually ended up going on a bus 2 hours up the mountain! No complaints here tho, because it was super pretty! We got to the site, and there were people still constructing the grave. Yes, they build the graves here. They are just cement boxes. To help pass the time in a reverent manner, the 4 of us that were members, sang hymns! It was a very spiritual time. They finished building the grave, and then they had me dedicate it! I had never done that before, let alone in Spanish, but it was pretty neat! Then we had another 2 hours to go back down!

The next day I thought my week could finally go back to what we had planned! Well, I was wrong. We went on exchanges, and I was with Elder Moran. We had a fun time! We taught a guy (the most Evangelico person I've met) who was most definitely 'high out of his mind' when we got there. The man's name was Phineas. We were talking, well listening to him talk, all about the gospel. I learned that Mormons don't believe in God and that Elder Moran and I don't have the spirit because we don't speak in tongues. (Even tho we both literally know two languages.) Phineas on the other hand does speak in tongues! It sounded a bit like gibberish, but I'm sure that it was the spirit talking through Phineas! Luckily for me and Elder Moran, Phineas decided to close with a prayer, and during this moment he put his hands on our heads blessing us with this great gift! I am happy to say, I can now speak gibberish! 😜

Also that same night we went to a noche de grupo with the family of the deceased man. We weren't aware that we were the ones who had to prepare a message tho! It was a good spiritual time! Then we found out that we would be having the noche de grupo every night until this coming Friday. Not sure how we were the ones that got put in charge of this, but so far we have taught many lessons and watched many videos!

Lots more happened this week, but the highlight was the baptism of Yasmina! Whooooo!! It was such a special day! She was so, so excited! And she gave one of the sweetest testimonies I've heard! It was just such a happy day!

For my spiritual thought I wanted to use the example of the Liahona. The Liahona would give direction to Lehi and his family according to their faith. As I was thinking about that, later in the week I read D&C 109:7 which says

"And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom, seek learning even by study and also by faith."

I ended up combining that scripture and the Liahona because God still gives us tools to guide and direct us! They are the best books and words of wisdom - scriptures, words of prophets, etc. But these tools only work to guide us according to our faith and diligence we put into them.

To compare further we can use the example of electric tools. The tools are there to help us, and to make things easier for us. But, they require a power source to function. Just as electricity powers the tools of man, faith and diligence powers the tools of God. Think about it.

I love you all! I hope you are all doing great! Keep praying for my people! Until next time!

Semana 47 (Where's Otto?)

Buenas!!

We started off this lovely week doing some service! We raked lots of leaves and debris! Then the family fed us an insane amount of chicken! And by that I mean, I literally ate almost an entire chicken by myself! 🐔

We also had Zone Conference in La Chorrera this week! It was super fun! Not much really happened. But it was fun to see and talk to lots of my friends! We also ate Subway! However, it was a wee bit sad because both my fathers (trainers) gave their final testimonies. To think in a single transfer, I am to become an orphan... but we got Chicheme after and all was good! Chicheme is basically sweet corn milk that is what I consider to be the "Nectar of the Gods".🌽🥛

Thursday was a wild day! We went to go find our friend Obdulia, and we had no clue where she lived. But we hopped on a bus, and away we went into the unknown. By pure miracles sent from heaven, she lives in our area by less than a mile, AND there on the bus we took, it just so happened that her nephew was there. Thus we arrived safely to wherever we were! Many prayers from Obdulia and us were answered. We taught her a good lesson, and she shared her whole life story. There is a lot to share about that, but I will just tell you all that God truly prepares his people! Obdulia is a complete miracle!🙏🙏

That same day we met a man named Otto. He was a very strange man, who liked to say even stranger things. He was attempting to talk in English, and I'm fairly certain I heard correctly, but from what I understood is that Elder Keck and I are "Multi-cultural hating Nazi's whom perform incest in such a way that we are in fact communistic Amish people." We tried leaving, but he just followed us. While he tried speaking more English to us, I decided to trip up his stride. I turned to Elder Keck and started speaking in Chinese. I would love to say I'm cool and know Chinese, but I was indeed speaking gibberish. However, it seemed to do the trick. Otto was so confused and slightly scared that he went away. He didn't go terribly far, and kept staring us down. But, as we were waiting for our bus we looked back to where he had been, and he vanished. My comp merrily turned to me and said "It's not where's Waldo, but where's Otto." Safe to say that if you ever see a Spaniard man wearing a striped red shirt, you found him😶‍🌫️🚨👀🕵

Friday there was a huge party! Food, cake, dancing, and a piñata! It was a really fun time! 🪅 🪅

Saturday there was also another big party! More food, cake, and dancing! 🕺💃

Sunday was just the good old day of rest. We had church, taught Yasmina, then had church again, and taught more lessons. It was a good day! Even better was the fact that Yasmina wanted to move her baptismal date forward! So she will be getting baptized even sooner!! Whooo!!

My thought for you all today is that God prepares a way! The scriptures say this all the time, but I add my testimony to it! God is perfect, and thus His plan is perfect! We just need to have the faith and humility to align ourselves with it, and then we see miracles!

I love you all so much! Have a fantastic week! Keep praying for my people! Until next week!
