Semana 97

Elder Lutze,

I pray all is well with you, your companion, and your area! We hope you had a safe and spiritual week!

I worked hard at home and at work and now I’m here with the McBrides praying this baby comes soon on her own!

Dad’s at home working on projects. Brent is coming up this week with Creed. I think they’re all going to a baseball game on Friday. I’m not sure what we’ll do for the 🧨4th here in Texas! 🇺🇸

I’m so glad you love family history! You can help me with it when you get back! Lots of research to do and temple work to be done!

Love you!

Semana 96

Elder Lutze,

I pray that this week went well for you, your companion, and your zone! Keep up the amazing work! I loved your story about bearing down in pure testimony. It is the most powerful thing we can do!

This week was the usual busy… work and home. YW on Tuesday where we did chalk drawings. I taught the lesson today. So happy to have great participation. Our Emotional Resilience group met on Wednesday and Leslie came for the first time. Rachael and I picked out a few new plants and a tree. 🌳We put them into the yard Friday and then Saturday was mulch day! We had enough help from the ward that we moved the whole 16 cubic yard pile in two hours to the flower beds. So grateful! ❤️

I loved Elder Patrick Kearon’s talk “God’s Intent is to Bring You Home” I think it deserves greater study!

I would like to express gratitude for your prayers as I have started the process of adjusting to the call, through President Nelson, to serve as an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. You can probably well imagine how humbling this has felt, and it has been a time of extraordinary upheaval and sobering self-examination. It is, however, indeed a great honor to serve the Savior, in any capacity, and to be engaged with you in sharing the good news of His gospel of hope. Beyond that, it has been said that behind every new Apostle stands an astonished mother-in-law. I don’t know if that has actually been said, but in this case, it certainly could be. And I suspect that the fact that my mother-in-law is no longer with us does nothing to reduce her astonishment.

Several months ago, when my wife and I were visiting another country for various Church assignments, I woke up early one morning and looked blearily outside our hotel window. Down below on the busy street, I saw that a roadblock had been set up with a policeman stationed nearby to turn cars around as they reached the barrier. At first, only a few cars traveled along the road and were turned back. But as time went by and traffic increased, queues of cars began to build up. From the window above, I watched as the policeman seemed to take satisfaction in his power to block the flow of traffic and turn people away. In fact, he seemed to develop a spring in his step, as if he might start doing a little jig, as each car approached the barrier. If a driver got frustrated about the roadblock, the policeman did not appear helpful or sympathetic. He just shook his head repeatedly and pointed in the opposite direction.

My friends, my fellow disciples on the road of mortal life, our Father’s beautiful plan, even His “fabulous” plan, is designed to bring you home, not to keep you out. No one has built a roadblock and stationed someone there to turn you around and send you away. In fact, it is the exact opposite. God is in relentless pursuit of you. He “wants all of His children to choose to return to Him,” and He employs every possible measure to bring you back.

Our loving Father oversaw the Creation of this very earth for the express purpose of providing an opportunity for you and for me to have the stretching and refining experiences of mortality, the chance to use our God-given moral agency to choose Him, to learn and grow, to make mistakes, to repent, to love God and our neighbor, and to one day return home to Him. He sent His precious Beloved Son to this fallen world to live the full range of the human experience, to provide an example for the rest of His children to follow, and to atone and redeem.

Christ’s great atoning gift removes every roadblock of physical and spiritual death that would separate us from our eternal home. Everything about the Father’s plan for His beloved children is designed to bring everyone home. What do God’s messengers, His prophets, call this plan in Restoration scripture? They call it the plan of redemption, the plan of mercy, the great plan of happiness, and the plan of salvation, which is unto all, “through the blood of mine Only Begotten.”

The intent of the Father’s great plan of happiness is your happiness, right here, right now, and in the eternities. It is not to prevent your happiness and cause you instead worry and fear.

The intent of the Father’s plan of redemption is in fact your redemption, your being rescued through the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ, freed from the captivity of sin and death. It is not to leave you as you are.

The intent of the Father’s plan of mercy is to extend mercy as you turn back to Him and honor your covenant of fidelity to Him. It is not to deny mercy and inflict pain and sorrow.

The intent of the Father’s plan of salvation is in fact your salvation in the celestial kingdom of glory as you receive “the testimony of Jesus” and offer your whole soul to Him. It is not to keep you out.

Does this mean anything goes with regard to how we live our lives? That the way we choose to use our agency doesn’t matter? That we can take or leave God’s commandments? No, of course not. Surely one of Jesus’s most consistent invitations and pleas during His mortal ministry was that we change and repent and come unto Him.
Fundamentally implicit in all of His teachings to live on a higher plane of moral conduct is a call to personal progression, to transformative faith in Christ, to a mighty change of heart. God wants for us a radical reorientation of our selfish and prideful impulses, the eviction of the natural man, for us to “go, and sin no more.”

If we believe the intent of the Father’s all-reaching plan is to save us, redeem us, extend mercy to us, and thereby bring us happiness, what is the intent of the Son through whom this great plan is brought about? The Son tells us Himself: “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.” Jesus’s will is the benevolent Father’s will! He wants to make it possible for every last one of His Father’s children to receive the end goal of the plan—eternal life with Them. None is excluded from this divine potential.

If you are prone to worry that you will never measure up, or that the loving reach of Christ’s infinite Atonement mercifully covers everyone else but not you, then you misunderstand. Infinite means infinite. Infinite covers you and those you love. Nephi explains this beautiful truth: “He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation.”

The Savior, the Good Shepherd, goes in search of His lost sheep until He finds them. He is “not willing that any should perish.” “Mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I receive.” “Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you.” He did not cast away the woman with the issue of blood; He did not recoil from the leper; He did not reject the woman taken in adultery; He did not refuse the penitent—no matter their sin.

And He will not refuse you or those you love when you bring to Him your broken hearts and contrite spirits. That is not His intent or His design, nor His plan, purpose, wish, or hope. No, He does not put up roadblocks and barriers; He removes them. He does not keep you out; He welcomes you in. His entire ministry was a living declaration of this intent. Then of course there is His atoning sacrifice itself, which is harder for us to understand, beyond our mortal capacity to comprehend. But, and this is an important “but,” we do understand, can comprehend, the holy, saving intent of His atoning sacrifice. The veil of the temple was rent in twain when Jesus died upon the cross, symbolizing that access back to the presence of the Father had been ripped wide open—to all who will turn to Him, trust Him, cast their burdens on Him, and take His yoke upon them in a covenant bond.

In other words, the Father’s plan is not about roadblocks. It never was; it never will be. Are there things we need to do, commandments to keep, aspects of our natures to change? Yes. But with His grace, those are within our reach, not beyond our grasp. This is the good news! I am unspeakably grateful for these simple truths. The Father’s design, His plan, His purpose, His intent, His wish, and His hope are all to heal you, all to give you peace, all to bring you, and those you love, home. Of this I am a witness in the name of Jesus Christ, His Son, amen.

I love you!

Love,

Semana 95 (Wow, This Coffee is Really Good!)

Buenas!!

Just a normal day here in Panama! By that I mean we are on the metro train and a man is preaching/shouting the word.

This week was really good! Very interesting, but I learned a lot!

Wednesday we went to see a doctor for my companion. My testimony on the Word of Wisdom definitely grew! The doctor was trying to figure out what was wrong, and the first questions he asked were if my comp drank alcohol, smoked, drank tea, drank coffee, or used drugs. The Word of Wisdom is real folks!

Ironically, right before that, we were in the elevator with two women who were drinking coffee. And I'm pretty sure they knew we don't drink coffee, because the only thing they said to each other was "Wow this is the best coffee I've ever had! It must be different today. I don't know why, but today it's just so much better!"

They then got off. Elder Rojas and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing

We had a family history activity in the ward! It didn't really work. But I learned that I really like family history!

The bishop called my arms fat. It just sounded funny is all.

The Diablo Rojos, which are the ghetto school buses, are always super full! So sometimes we get to hang outside of it. By that I mean that your feet are in the bus, but your body is hanging outside of it. It's awesome!!

There was a big Fathers day activity! All the dads liked it a lot! The spirit wasn't really there though. They did the activity in the chapel. They had really loud music and there was some dancing that probably wasn't the best. It was weird.

Church was good! Panamanians are scared of the rain, so lots didn't come. But our friend Deogracias came! She's so awesome! She's gonna be baptized next week!! We taught her and all the youth on Sunday, and it was a super fun lesson!

Some thoughts for the week...

Remember Diomar? The man from Facebook we happened to contact? Well we went by a few times. But the last time we went didn't go so well.

From the moment we walked in the house the spirit wasn't there. To sum up what happened, he started telling us the entire life of Joseph Smith by memory. Every. Single. Detail. With dates and everything. Meaning he knew it long before we had taught him anything. He started bashing us. And we just sat there smiling. Just listening.

Once he finished, we both bore a very strong testimony of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. The Spirit instantly filled the room. Then we left.

Later I was trying to think of what more we could have done. And I thought about Jesus. The Pharisees many times tried to contend with Jesus. They tried to get him to contend back. But Jesus always gave testimony of what He knew to be true.

Trying to argue never works! The spirit of contention is of the Devil! So sometimes all we can do is bear down in pure testimony of the truth, and walk away.

So the miracle may not have happened the way we wanted it to with Diomar. But I count it as a blessing in the things I learned!

So my invitation for you all is to always give testimony! In word and in deed. Your testimony is one of the most powerful things you possess! So use it!

"Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord" ~ 2 Timothy 1:8

I love you all lots! I'm always praying for you! Keep praying for my people and my zone! Until Next Week!

Semana 95

Dear Elder Lutze,

We continue to pray for you, your companion, and your zone! What did the urologist say? I hope E. Rojas got what he needs to get better!❤️‍🩹

Just busy here with the usual… work at work and work at home. Dad’s in SG and I’m here - both working on different projects! I helped clean the church yesterday! Dad got out of that one!🤪 I leave in 2 weeks to help Hannah with new baby. And two weeks after that to DC with Rachael for Kyle and Camilla’s wedding. In August we hope to spend some time with Papa Fred and help with things at his house.

Joseph Brandt spoke in church today. I can’t believe he’s home! He asked about you and when you’d be home.

I’m especially emotional today about my mission. E. Christofferson is dedicating the Salta Argentina temple today. I’ve been pondering about the families I taught and how they will be blessed by the temple. How many of them are there today?

I love this quote on bearing pure testimony! Only a few more months to bear that pure testimony as a missionary! Don’t miss any opportunity!

Elder M. Russell Ballard counseled Latter-day Saints to bear pure testimony: “Simply stated, testimony—real testimony, born of the Spirit and confirmed by the Holy Ghost—changes lives. It changes how you think and what you do. It changes what you say. It affects every priority you set and every choice you make. … “My experience throughout the Church leads me to worry that too many of our members’ testimonies linger on ‘I am thankful’ and ‘I love,’ and too few are able to say with humble but sincere clarity, ‘I know.’ As a result, our meetings sometimes lack the testimony-rich, spiritual underpinnings that stir the soul and have meaningful, positive impact on the lives of all those who hear them. “Our testimony meetings need to be more centered on the Savior, the doctrines of the gospel, the blessings of the Restoration, and the teachings of the scriptures. We need to replace stories, travelogues, and lectures with pure testimonies. … “… To bear testimony is ‘to bear witness by the power of the Holy Ghost; to make a solemn declaration of truth based on personal knowledge or belief’ (Guide to the Scriptures, “Testify”). Clear declaration of truth makes a difference in people’s lives. That is what changes hearts. That is what the Holy Ghost can confirm in the hearts of God’s children.

Love you!

Semana 94 (What Would Jesus Do?)

Buenas!!

It was a good week this week! Tuesday we got absolutely poured on! It was awesome! We basically ran from house to house for shelter, but no one let us in. So we enjoyed a nice shower! About time we took one 😬

*We played Calle 7! It's a sport here in Central America. It's awesome! It's kind of like an obstacle course race. It's hard to describe. But, I beat everyone! It's a really popular thing here in Panama.

We had our leadership conference. It was good! Got to see Elder Ence and catch up a bit with him. Love that man!

We had exchanges. I went with Elder Rápalo! We also left with 2 members. Basically everyone who was with me was new to missionary work. In other words, I felt like I was training 3 people at once! It was awesome!

*Miracle Moment

We were walking to visit some people, and I saw a guy walking in the opposite direction. I felt impressed that I should talk to him, but then my other half made some wimpy excuse not to. We walked past each other. But, I then remembered reading a really good email that talked about doing what Jesus would do.

What would Jesus do? Follow the impression and talk to the guy. So I flipped a 180 and chased the guy down. We asked if he had talked to the missionaries, and he told us that literally the day before he had filled out a Facebook announcement to talk to the missionaries. He then INVITED US to his house to teach him! Anyways, his name is Diomar. He is super awesome! And super positive!

Our friend Dereck got baptized on Saturday!!! I'm so happy for him! It was a good time!

We absolutely destroyed in soccer today! Me and my comp both played soccer before the mission, so we were playing with all the Latinos, and we just absolutely wrecked them. Such a good Pday!

My thought for the week is actually  'a learn from my own mistakes moment.' Me and my comp wanted to celebrate after Dereck's baptism. So we were gonna go get a treat. On our way, we both wanted the other to decide where to go. Our pride took over, and we both decided to wait for the other to chicken out and decide. We waited a good long while. Then we went home without a treat!

It's kind of funny because of how stupid it was! But, I learned that pride is dumb! And it's not worth it! We both lost in that situation. But we both learned our lesson! And I hope y'all learn the lesson from my mistake too! Don't worry tho, me and my comp are really good friends. 😄

Love y'all lots! Have a great week! Keep praying for my zone and my people! Until next week!

Semana 94

Dear Elder Lutze,

I pray all is well with you, your area, and your companion. Brother Cunningham thanked me again today for your letters. He said they make his week. Bishop is slowly recovering from his surgery. He will need chemo and radiation so keep him in your prayers!!!

This week was full of work at home and at work. The yard is a full time job. Dad is going down to SG this week Thursday to Tuesday. We ate a donut sandwich for National Donut Day and spent some time with Jim. He was out here to move Dylan and Cassi to Florida.

Rachael’s packet is finally being processed, so she should see money soon! The McBrides are enjoying Ft Worth. I’ll be there in 3 weeks to help when Hannah has baby girl. Hunter chipped his front tooth at the pool. 😢 Natalie is loving Europe - France 🇫🇷 , Ireland 🇮🇪 , and England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿! She’s texted us more on her trip than while here!

I’m grateful for your willingness to serve wherever the Lord needs you! Like Alma in Alma 4:18-20!!!

Love you!

Semana 93 (The Little Morrnings)

Buenas!!

Ya know that moment when your brain doesn't function? And then you say something that doesn't make sense at all. Well for the past two weeks, I've been saying the little mountains when it's really called the Little Mornings. But, those are the moments you just laugh at yourself! 🤣

This week was really good! But, also really, really crazy. So much happened and is happening right now!

Tuesday my comp and I were sent on a 'Spy' mission to visit some other Elders. They live SUPER far away! We left at 2:30 in the morning and got there at 7:30!

But, we had a really good day with them over there in Palmas Bellas. I went with Elder Calderón. While there I also went detective mode, and I found out a few things going on. So life might get a little strange for me and my comp soon

We moved into the new apartment! It's for sure a lot better than the last one! And a lot more natural light! It's so nice!!

The only downside of moving was the fact that we had to clean the other apartment... which I like cleaning. I do. But man, after years of missionaries living there, I think it would have been better to burn the place down!!! 🧨

I went on an intercambio with my old comp Elder Long! It was really fun! I did two baptismal interviews which were both very spiritual. It was also really good to catch up with Elder Long a bit.

We had a good consejo de distrito. Right after we had exchanges with the APs! I went with Elder Gongora. Love that guy. On the exchange, I contacted/became friends with a Russian named AL. He was lit! He wants to go to church, and he bought my bread for me :)

On the same intercambio I was proposed to. It was weird. They said they wanted to be a Mormon, only to marry me tho. No thanks!

We also had Stake Conference! We sang in the choir, I listened to my '70' friend, Elder Mora, (we met in Antón) speak, and lots of our friends came! It was a very spiritual meeting!

Afterwards we did another exchange! 4 this week, kinda crazy! But I went with Elder Vasquez, and it was super fun!

Today for Pday we went on a hike. It was SO BEAUTIFUL! Pretty trees, mountains, water, etc. I love nature so much. We rented a bus as a zone, crammed ourselves in there like sardines, and it was just such a fun Zone Pday. We ended at a park, and we played some frisbee and other sports.

A little girl drew an awesome picture of me!

Saw some ducks eating rice. Sounds like Panama!

Spiritual thought for the day goes with what Elder Mora said in the conference. Make our homes little slices of heaven! He shared an experience of how he and his wife were quarantined in the hospital. Mentally he started to break, so they asked permission to be put together in the same room. The moment he walked into his wife's room there was such a strong spirit! The walls were filled with pictures of Jesus. She had painted scripture quotes. She had made a quarantine  room in a hospital a little slice of heaven.

I love that so much! And it's a new goal of mine, to make my home always be a little slice of heaven! I invite you all to do the same!

Love you all lots! Keep praying for me, my people, and my zone! Until Next Week!

Semana 93

Dear Elder Lutze,

I’m so grateful for your service and sacrifice on the Lord’s behalf as you serve out the rest of your mission! You’re amazing!

I shared with the youth on Tuesday night a few things about my mission and then some of the food - empanadas and facturas!!! 🇦🇷

Dad and I went on our 2nd date night that y’all gave us for Christmas on Saturday. We had to buy each other something to wear at the restaurant we’d already chosen - Edna’s. Of course, it had to be from DI. I’ve attached a few pictures! The food was delicious and I should have charged for all the stares!!!🤪

I love this quote from Dad’s Sunday School lesson this week…

I love you!

❤️ Mom

“Testimony is the beginning of and a prerequisite to continuing conversion. Testimony is a point of departure; it is not an ultimate destination. Strong testimony is the foundation upon which conversion is established.

Testimony alone is not and will not be enough to protect us in the latter-day storm of darkness and evil in which we are living. Testimony is important and necessary but not sufficient to provide the spiritual strength and protection we need

… the powerful combination of both testimony and conversion unto the Lord produced firmness and steadfastness and provided spiritual protection.

They never did fall away and surrendered “the weapons of their rebellion, that they did not fight against God anymore.” To set aside cherished “weapons of rebellion” such as selfishness, pride, and disobedience requires more than merely believing and knowing. Conviction, humility, repentance, and submissiveness precede the abandonment of our weapons of rebellion. Do you and I still possess weapons of rebellion that keep us from becoming converted unto the Lord? If so, then we need to repent now.

Knowing that the gospel is true is the essence of a testimony. Consistently being true to the gospel is the essence of conversion. We should know the gospel is true and be true to the gospel.”
